Tatami and L’ŒIL DE TOKYO
a frame on a tatami: the essence of our concept
An L’ŒIL DE TOKYO frame resting on a tatami: such a simple composition, and yet it holds the very essence of our concept. The meeting of original French design with Japanese craftsmanship, understated and functional.
In various forms, Kokuryō Tatami’s pieces serve as display supports for our frames in store, and as backdrops for the studio packshots on our website. Tatami has become an integral part of our visual identity.

Kokuryō Tatami
a neighborhood workshop, founded in 1925
Founded in 1925, Kokuryō Tatami is a local workshop specializing in handcrafted tatami, just a few minutes’ walk from our Jiyugaoka store. We have been working together regularly ever since the store opened.

TATAMI IN A FEW WORDS:
◻︎ Tatami (畳): traditional Japanese floor covering, made of a rigid core covered with a woven mat.
◻︎ Igusa (い草): a rush whose dried, woven stems form the surface of the tatami, prized for its texture and natural scent.
◻︎ Heri (畳縁): the fabric band that edges the tatami, protecting its sides and adding a touch of color or pattern.
